SKull Art: Homage to Basquiat

wip oil on wood
Here is the painting so far, needs a bit tweaking, especially the face and hand and a few areas on the skull. Once it is thoroughly dry I will coat it with resin.
NOTE:If you would like to licence or use this image please contact: jafagirlart (at) yahoo (dot) com

As you can see on the shelf there is a wee kewpie doll Margot, YIKES! I haven't got a clue what I am going to do with it for your kewpie doll challenge.

Painted Stone Assemblage

"chat room"
oil painted stone, camera box and wood box

He kind of looks like Peter Lorre, but really the face was determined by the shape of the stone. In a way though it is rather fitting that it should look like him in one of his finest roles as Hans Beckert in the chilling Fritz Lang movie "m"

Mr. Pickles

Mr.Pickles enjoys the flowers

I was very happy to see an old painting of mine at the gallery found a home

I hope the buyer enjoys "Felicity Goes to Tea in her Finery"
She is wearing her finest clothes
Miss Snooty hopes that all the guests will be impressed with her new satin pants, which quite frankly are as ugly as sin BUT she thinks they are the bees knees.

Knitted Poo & Noses

Knitted Poo Invitations
I saw one on the net somewhere and thought it hilarious, so I mentioned it to my jafapal Nancy, and wham, off we go knitting poos nightly. One of the blokes off the Dwyer & Michaels show that interviewed us suggested we put potpourii in them LOL! Anyway we are making them as invitations for the ChamberPot Gallery reception. I thought I would do a google check and see if I could credit the person who inspired us, but my oh my do you know how many people are making knitted poos? So I guess I will thank them all for inspiring yet another version of knitted poo.
From a matching set there is the loo roll and poo, the Pocket Farmer, Adopt-a-Poop (yes it's true you can adopt one and dang I see they have potpourri in them too), Dang, yet another potpourri poo, and then there is the Happy Poo pattern, Mr.Hankey Christmas Poo by Ansley of Bleu Arts,
doodie note holder (okay not knitted, but I thought it funny)

Fecal Matters can be seen on our jafagirlart website. Just for your information our knitted poos are imbued with the sweet SMELL of lavender and will cause no offense to the olfactory senses of those finding them in various spots around town.

NOSES
I am just stuck on noses at the moment, even had a nightmare about one last night and how to make one. I think Nancy and I will just have to do a nose pole for our textile totem series. It always fascinates me how some people seem to think everyone else wants to know their business or they want to know others. I mean who would care if mrs. whatsherface down the street jumped on a trampoline and had a jolly good earth shattering fluff fest every monday morning (not real event and it isn't me, I don't have a trampoline anymore) or mrs.so&so's spent a lot of money on parquet flooring. Do people really think their lives are so fascinating that everyone wants to nose around and gossip about them? Do some people lead such boring lives that they have to call around (yes we have someone in our neighbourhood who does this) to find out the mundane details of what mrs. mindyerownbeeswax has been doing?

Nose Jokes

Did you Know
Dr. Friedrich Bischinger, a lung specialist working in Innsbruck says picking your nose and eating your boogers is good for you. Honest!
I would think shoving your fingers up your nose in search of quality immune busters might lead to getting a big snozzle.

KEEP YOUR PECKER UP
I had to stop staying "keep your pecker up" when I came to the USA
Being from an English speaking country did not save me from a few embarrassing or awkward moments of linguistic confusion. It may have meant nose back in England, but err, not in the USA.

SKull Art: Homage to Basquiat

Method: Adobe Photoshop

I can't really get into painting because I'm gearing up for art stroll night (jafagirl demo for free art friday and chamberpot gallery opening), so I have been playing with ideas for paintings using adobe photoshop. Basquiat is one of my favourite artists, I think because I like the raw quality of the work, the meaning behind it and the colours.
I saw the movie ( David Bowie was brilliant as Warhol) and while the movie was really good , the book Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art gives an excellent insight into the art market of the time, and a broader picture of who Basquiat was. To see some of his work the Brooklyn Museum website has a great site.

I don't know anybody who needs a critic to find out what art is."

Skeletons on the Street

Honey, does this make me look fat or phat?

So Esqualita went to town yesterday and did a bit graffiti and then went shopping at her fave store :) She is becoming quite famous since people kept stopping and touching her a
nd wanting their piccy's taken with her. Didn't have time to put up any knit graffiti, so I may do some today. Meanwhile back at the ranch I am watching the paint dry (skull painting). I have a terrible urge to do another painting on a record, must go, it is calling me. Helloooooooooooo Jafabrit, I spin in delight awaiting your gentle brushtrokes. Gotta go! Toodles all!

ps. you may have noticed the white around Esqualita! I moved her with adobe just to see if she looked better in front of the shop. Oh the marvels of technology and adobe!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my special girl.

It's Monday and its Studio Day

It is such a beautiful morning. I am working on another camo doll, sewing and my skull painting. I am really so excited about my skull painting to the point I can't wait for it to be finished. Not good, it means I have to SLOW myself down so it isn't rushed.

Oh this is the bench I helped paint for (jafagirl) Nancy's project outside the cooperative gallery she is a member of. It is a wonderful way to brighten up old benches and I am so glad Nancy made it happen. Already I have seen several visitors to the village wanting photos of themselves sitting on them.

Here is the skull painting I am working on. I see the right cheekbone needs work on. It's not an actual record, but based on the vinyl record painting I did.

So what are YOU working on and how is your Monday planned?

Presents, Trophies, and Challenges

Sometimes there are days when things are said and done that just makes a persons day. I had one of those the other day, not only with such lovely comments ( thank you to those who take the time comment, I really appreciate it.), a present from olga the traveling bra arrived in the mail, and a trophy (Art Y Pico) waiting for me on her blog. I couldn't stop laughing when I got the mug (I mean really a bra sends me a mug -how wonderfully crazy is that).
AND then I had such a wonderful day in the studio (oh, now you know that feels sooooooooooo good).
AND then there is Margot's Kewpie Doll Challenge LOL! I can't wait to see what everybody does.

I seem to be having a thing with skulls and skeletons lately lol! Anyway I am expanding on the vinyl record painting I did and doing it on wood with a pattern (similar to the doll paintings on vinyl).
For Free Art Fridays I made a fun little assemblage with a computer part and a clay cow head.
So there you have it, a day in an artist's life, not wildly exciting, but rich with what makes me feel blessed.

Raining Cats and Dogs & Street Art

So instead of our usual one hour walk on Tuesday Nancy and I went and had brekkers at Foys Rock and Roll Grill in Fairborn , Ohio. To me this is so Americana and a lot of fun to visit, plus the egg and toast wasn't too shabby either. Great atmosphere and the staff are really friendly.

Afterwards we had about 30mins no rain and we managed to yarn bomb two posts on Dayton Street before we got caught in the rain and walked home like two wet puppies.

This camo barbie is really sneaky because you really can't see it until you get close to the pole.
I had the idea we would do a gossip totem and cover it with noses, but noses cost a lot of dosh, and spending money isn't in the picture. So if anyone has a large quantity of small rubber noses, I would be glad to accept donations ;) Okay, joking aside I am really into the camouflage at the moment. You know what it's like, we get our mini obsessions LOL!
