Four and Twenty Blackbirds

Sing a Song of Sixpence,
A bag full of Rye,
Four and twenty
Naughty boys (blackbirds),
Bak'd in a Pye.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;

Was not that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?
The king was in his counting-house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlor,
Eating bread and honey.
The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes,
There came a little blackbird,
And snapped off her nose.

Commissions and The process

On commissions
I once had someone say in shock when I said I don't do commissions " but don't you want to sell your work?" I said "but you are not wanting to buy my work you want to buy my services to create something for you." The thing is I am not selling a service (more power to those who can), I sell the results of what I do as an artist.

The Creative Process: What I DON'T do
1. hum! twiddle thumbs, I'm bored, I will go and paint or something, anything.
2. I should do something, Oh I know, a flower painting, that will sell.
3. I need to create anything, whatever to sell in the gallery
4. I will paint anything for a buck

The Creative Process: What really happens
1. OMG that flower is gorgeous, I must paint it, I wonder if I can.
2. I love that bird shape, wonder if I can do it in felt (I love hand sewing).
3. Oh that will be an interesting challenge (as in the "my documents please" piece).
4. OMG, that scares me, I must say how I feel, how do I say it.
5. OMG that paint colour is YUMMY! I have to play with paint.
6. OMG that yarn is YUMMY, I must knit it or use it.
7. OMG I have to photograph that.
8. OMG her hair is gorgeous, I must paint it, I have to paint it, can I do hair.
9. hum I wonder if I can do something fun with records or crushed cans

Many people seem to be under the illusion that the end product is everything, but for me it is the process that is everything Yes, there is a pleasure at being able to convey something in a particular piece, but that isn't the driving force. The driving force is the passionate need to express something that has moved me.

I don't mind being asked if I do commissions.
What I mind is the umbrage/disdain as if I am supposed to want to do it and it is somehow a personal slap in their face when I say I don't do commissions.
If you love/like/enjoy my work it is because I paint from the heart
don't then turn around and ask me to paint for a buck
and then
get in a fricking snit
because I say
I don't do commissions

MultiMedia Artist?

Effigy wish doll by c.bayrak
I had a anon commentator on another blog (talking about knit graffiti) scoff at my mention that I was a multimedia artist when I stated I also used yarn as a medium to express myself (they said my claim of being a multimedia artist was a bit of a stretch). I had to wonder if they had either never visited my website or blog OR maybe just didn't know what a multimedia artist is.
So for those who may wonder a multimedia artist uses a combination of different materials, media, supports, to express themselves. I like the freedom to work between genres, disciplines, mediums, between fine art and craft, high art and low art and prefer not to work within traditional boundaries or accepted genres.

12 Pack Show
Reception went well and I want to thank those that came, to those who took the time to let me know what they think of my work, and my blog.
Thank You

On commissions

I had a difficult time trying to explain to someone last night why I don't do commissions and being nonplussed I might have come across as being flippant.
The truth is I find them difficult because I am no longer fulfilling my own need to express something, which is the core of how I work as an artist.
Simple as that really.

Crafts: Felt Birds

felt, iron on transfer eye based on my painted dickey bird, fabric, paint, and buttons

Thought I would make a bunch of bird ornaments for the Nolaa Gallery while I sit and watch movies in the evenings. I can't get my teeth into a new painting series until I have cleared the studio of smaller projects and prepped the studio. Now if I had a lovely big barn with ooddles of space I could have several workstations, as well as my workbench and tools, a pot belly stove, a big soft comfy paint splattered couch, and maybe a cocktail bar. Oh that would be soooooooooo cool! As it is my studio isn't big enough to swing a cat.
Below is an old video showing the general state of my studio.

goodies in the mail

I got a lovely surprise when I won something on Judith's artsy blog, which is now hanging on my wall next to my wishing doll shrine. On the other side is a lovely postcard of Casey Klahn's work. I would say my doll is in good company.
Thanks Judith I am so enjoying your beautiful painting.

painting on wood

"Antinous" oil on poplar wood sold I keep meaning to get around to doing more of these small black and white paintings. Ever heard that before fellow artists LOL! I find this type of painting very soothing and I love the feel of painting on poplar wood. I usually sand the wood until it is very smooth and then use a gesso for wood supports and do two coats, sand again and then use a black gesso. Well, let's see what I get around to because lately I seem to be faffing about when it comes to serious painting. I have ideas but I just can't seem to get started. I just KNOW you

Ink wash study in sketchbook

No, not talking about the folk singer but that sudden feeling you get in your gut, that heavy dull ache that throbs like a pendulum, back and forth eating away at your soul when you hear someone you love is hurt. My son was shot in the eye with a bb gun. It was just one of those bizarre accidents but it was lucky it was a plastic bullet otherwise he may have lost his eye. As it is it bounced off but caused the blood vessels in the eye to bleed and swell. It has been a week now and some of the swelling is down but his eye still bleeds. For another two weeks he has to live in the dark (can't use the good eye either because when he uses it his other eye thinks it needs to work also), put drops in his eye every hour and wait.  My anguish is compounded by the fact that I can't help him because he's a million miles away in another country and I can't just dash over there. He tells me he is okay, tells me not to worry. I am a mother I sit here with a leadbelly and wait & wait & wait.
