Blurring the Lines

I seem to have a thing for weaving back & forth between mediums & blurring the lines. As I work on a new yarnbombing camo doll for International Yarnbombing Day I've started a new embroidery based on an old one called the Gulch Gal. I still have the doll who is a bit worse for wear. Will be mixing, paint, embroidery and print on this piece and just like my camo dolls, hopefully the elements are hidden until closer inspection.

Started working on a new embroidery piece, YEA!

Yarbombing Slide Show and Yarnbombing Day

Busy working on a new camo doll yarnbombing  for International Yarnbombing Day. Not BIG and grand, BUT is very popular with townies, and I thought it was about time I got another one up either the night before, or early in the morning before thousands descend on us for Street Fair.
Here's a few we've done since 2007.

I finished my graffiti fragment hand embroidery based on a section of a wall in graffiti alley Ann Arbor MI and my vampire bunny street sticker.
10 1/2" x 7" embroidery floss and paint on linen
Long and Short Stitch and satin stitch
and yes I was going crosseyed finishing it last night
Told you I was obsessed ;)

If I wasn't so obsessed

with painting, embroidery and street art I think I would go bonkers with this book Astounding Knits because the crochet and knitting is just phenomenal.

Talking about obsessions, Liza Lou is often accused of that, but aren't we all one way or another when we have a passion for something.  Can't even let tendinitis stop us, right!

Meanwhile someone in my critique group asked me why I use the same images over and over again. I asked her if it's because she believes some might think I can't come up with something else?  She said, "yes". It's a fair question and to be honest before I got into art that thought had crossed my mind too. AH! but that was then, NOW I know. I love seeing how I can interpret the same image in different ways, and contexts and yes, I am obsessed.

and I stitch on.

Planking in Yellow Springs

Just in case you don't know  what planking is!  A rather strange fad :) and can be deadly. Jafapal Karen is a good sport indeed, battling ants for art.

Graffiti’s Cozy, Feminine Side says the NYT

New York Times story is all over the blogosphere, including on the HuffingtonPost. I  see my stencil graff image on the beginning of the Bing Images slide show below the article on Huffington Post, but it's not attributed to me.

Anyway, this is a stencil I cut out and spray painted onto a recycled piece my daughter made from the Knit Knot Tree.

It's interesting to see how yarnbombing has evolved into bigger and more elaborate pieces. I wish them all the best :)

Meanwhile back at home, our humble contributions can be seen in  recently published book Urban Knits by Simone Werle.

Graffiti Fragments in Stitch: Zombie Rabbit

WIP: Vampire Bunny image on a wall in Graffiti Alley, Liberty Street, Ann Arbor. It's the bunny I drew with my left hand :) This is just the stitched part, so it's bigger than this.

Thrifty Finds

I love it when I come across vintage goodies at garage sales. Found this vintage Rorstrand ovenware from Sweden and this Vintage Couroc of Monterey Owl Tray.
UPDATE: the Rorstrand Museum just let me know that it was made at their factory in Lidkoping between 1965-1979 and designed by Marianne Westman

about couroc

Meanwhile back in the village, the sun was shining and I couldn't resist taking a pic of the flowers in the Art Park with the Jafaworkz Art Panels in the background.

I was so bummed we couldn't hang Pierre's Panel (err, coz he painted it the wrong way), BUT lucky me, he said I could have it.

It's currently on display in Brother Bears, but I still plan to find a home for it, although I have a selfish desire to KEEP it for ME.

USA National Doodle Day

this website will tell you all about it.

Did you know that a study has shown that doodling helps you pay attention.

If you are addicted to doodling maybe you need to check in with Doodlers Anonymous. Some amazing artwork/doodles on this site.

Cancer Voodoo Dolls

I don't normally do commissions, but this was a special request. The above one is for bladder cancer and the one below is for brain cancer.

Each will go inside a special felt case.

art news
Berlin Wall artists sue city in copyright controversy. Removing their murals due to maintenance is one thing, BUT having someone recreate their work because the artists wouldn't accept their measly offer is not acceptable.

Wow! glad our village is more supportive of public art and NOT like Greenwood Lake.

In Craftivist News:  what will happen to the giant ball of yarn by the Ladies Fancywork Society. I thought it added a very interesting commentary to the bear statue and really liked it.

Embroidery of Street Sticker

Finally finished my hand embroidery piece. I accidently ripped the side when tearing the fabric, but decided I really liked it, PHEW!
It's based on this Street Sticker I made
the sticker is based on this painting for a series of effigy sticks I did a few years ago.

It's just a Phrase BUT

what does this phrase

Is it reinforcing a stereotype about older women in it's attempt to break a stereotype about knitting/crochet? If so, then is that not promoting a stereotype about older women?
The funny thing is when I googled "not your grannies teacups'
this image came up and I couldn't stop laughing because, well they are. Has such a retro feel to them, kind of stuff I saw back in the 60's.
Oh, and do you want to see "not your grannies panties"well they kind of ARE, but.
Alright! Alright! I will give them this, I never saw anything like these porcelain figurines around granny's house.

I tried to google "not your grandpa's this or that", and didn't come up with much of anything.

Oh well, it's just a phrase, yes?

Travel with Me

Is the theme I picked for the Art House Sketchbook Project 2012

I must have a thing for eyes because I put one on the last project cover too, only this time I stitched it on sheer fabric.
I had dreams or nightmares (could go either way) all night trying to figure out how I wanted to do the inside cover.

Art on Trial

The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. A "unique organization, devoted solely to the defense of free expression in all its forms."

The use of the Barbie Doll in a satirical work qualified for Fair Use in a court case. However Nadia is facing legal harrassment for using an image in the same way, although it isn't an exact copy of their product, rather it has a similarity. Nadia did have her day in court. As Nadio states: "when the judge asked LV's attorney why Darfurnica was mentioned in the lawsuit - and forbidden by the court order - if they didn't have a problem with it? To which their attorney responded "You shouldn't read it like that." Then the judge asked how else he could read it, since the painting is the first thing mentioned in the list of works they want to forbid."
Ruling should be within a few days.

Still plodding along with the embroidery version of the street art sticker I put up in Graffiti Alley (also known as Trippers Alley)a few years ago. I finally figured how I want to incorporate it into a larger piece.
Still busy planning two local art installations and two more textile graffiti pieces.
