Portrait Painting on Wood

"smitten"
I don't have my camera, so I am posting a painting I did several years ago. This is oil on wood and an early experiment in painting on wood. It was a scrap piece of wood and I used a glazing technique (using liquin-a non yellowing medium for thinning oils). I won first place in the 2003 Springfield Museum of Art Members Exhibit, which was very encouraging. Don't we all need that little boost now and again :) Since then I have really enjoying learning to paint on a variety of woods, or wood composite supports (currently mdf, which is high density and moisture resistant).

October art stroll is coming together, and because having a street art themed event in the senior center great hall doesn't sound very hip I came up with a name and we decided to call the room "the hip joint" for the evening :)
We are going to have live music, video/slide show with pics of found art, graffiti, tag, posters and sticker art.

Saying of the Day: When it rains, why don't sheep shrink?

Great work! BTW - shouldn't it by 'why' rather than 'who' when it comes to shrunken sheep???!!

Now I'm at it .... 'be' not 'by'!!

Lovely painting. I can see why it won the prize. I agree - it's quite a boost to the morale to be recognised that way.

Good luck with the Hip Joint.

Wonderful post! That portrait you did on wood is outstanding! I just got alot of wood, family cleaned out a few things...I was going to ask, do you have to DO anything to the wood? Just start painting on it I suppose right? Or does it matter what type of wood it is?
Anyhoo, you did a great job! :)

Lovely Painting. It's softness against the wood is outstanding.
Getting recognition in that way must be good for the soul.....

angela, you need to sand the wood, then put several coats of gesso on it, sanding between each. You also need to seal the back and sides of the wood with a coat of gesso and then clear acrylic sealer.

This is one painting I decided to keep as I enjoy it. Thanks for dropping by everyone.

I'm still trying to figure out the sheep saying.

well I don't know if any of you have worn a real wool coat and been caught in a rainstorm, but I did once and it shrunk up to my arse.

Thank you! That was pretty funny, what you did to your cousin. I wonder how long it took before he or she realized that it wasn’t a new flavor of chocolate.
