studio updates: yarnbombing, embroidered butterfly, library residency and BOG ART

I had this weird notion that since the gallery that represented me had closed I would be slowing down in 2016
Oh my did I get that wrong, lol!

Yarnbombing or boob bombing ;)
Things are progressing slowly on the Breast Cancer Support Yarnbombing Project due to health distractions, weather and other commitments, but Nancy and I did get the second tree done.

Exhibiting
"love lies bleeding"
My embroidery butterfly "love lies bleeding" is now in Maryland for the Finding My Own Voice exhibit. Wish I could attend the reception and some of the talks, and of course see the work. Honored to be included in this exhibit and much thanks to the hard work of Judith Olivia Heartsong.

It is said the eyes are the windows to the soul, but people can't see when your soul is bleeding, when the soul has been murdered, and your heart has be slashed with a thousand cuts.

Library Residency in Dayton
Nancy and I are honored to be invited to do a 6 week artist residency in a new library opening in April. Our residency will be in August and will involve installations as well as working on a community project. EXCITED!

BOG ART
ongoing project
Banner Drawing by jafabrit and text art by nancy
I don't know whose idea this was, but Talitha Greene was the driving force behind the idea that the jafagirls do mini art exhibits in local public loos in Yellow Springs, Ohio. I've been having fun printing out a few of my ipad drawings and enhancing them with a bit hand embroidery.

A Wendy's Protest In Columbus Ohio

b&w photography
Our day in Columbus was not without a little adventure and social awareness, and this was a really LARGE group protesting along North High Street.

Protesters target Wendy's over treatment of farmworkers

COLUMBUS (WCMH/AP) - Hundreds of protesters took to the streets Sunday against Wendy's in their treatment of farmworkers. The protesters, led by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, marched from Goodale Park to Tuttle Park. The coalition is calling for a nation boycott, claiming that Wendy's shifted its purchases to Mexico, denying human rights and profiting from farmworker poverty.

7 Ways To Celebrate International Women's Day

March is National Women's History Month here in the U.S., but this Tuesday, March 8 is a global observance of women worldwide. There are so many different ways to celebrate International Women's Day, so the real question is, how will you be honoring the holiday? This year, the message of

so here goes

and it's sad we NEED a "woman's art museum" but until history book writers stop excising them from history, or the lack of parity within the art scene changes such a need will continue.

Photo Rights: Hey, you can't take a picture of this wall!

Last Sunday I was recovering from Surgery, and this Sunday I had some bloke telling me I couldn't take a photograph of a wall with graffiti on it in Columbus, Ohio. Oh the joy of just not giving a rat's backside, and enjoying the day, even when someone is being a bit of a you know what. That's what a brush with C does to you, although I never really was one to sweat the small stuff to start with.
I just did that brit thing, ya know!

and politely did not engage

Lumpectomy: Beam Me Up I want OUTTA here

I was already pretty bruised up from the biopsy, so what's a bit more bruising eh! I don't know how other places prep their patients for a lumpectomy BUT at the Breast Center I was scanned, squished, prodded, numbed, plugged and wired. Nurse said I didn't need to look down, and I was like HELL I'm an artist I HAVE to look. EEEEEEEk!
I had a big old wire sticking out of me tata.
I felt like I should twist my nipple and change the channel or scream "BEAM ME UP, I want outta here". I got outta there, but not to hawaii, nope, went straight into surgery.

If you want to know why the wire, it's a guide wire for the surgeon  so can go straight to shitlump and rip that bastard sucker out of there.

I have never really regarded my art as therapy, but more of a daily expression and creative need. HOWEVER, throughout this health crisis art has been very therapeutic.

Creative Arts Beneficial to Cancer Patients

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health and colleagues analyzed more than 2 dozen studies of creative arts therapies to see the effect of these therapies on cancer patients.
