Ghosts of Antioch

Graffiti outside Birch Hall

Well I didn't actually see any ghosts but it was very very sad to see Antioch College nothing more than a ghost campus, shut down and quiet.
This was Antioch
Rod Serling wandered the halls, as did Coretta Scott King, and so many others but their voices still ring out.

I am a nonstopian
I signed up for a credit class with the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute (they are a partnership of ex Antioch Faculty, alumni, students staff and friends of Antioch College AND the Village of Yellow Springs). It is a Drawing Within the Community class. Keep your fingers crossed it fills up because I am really excited about it.

JafaBrit is Fagged

It was FAF (free art friday) and the jafagirls were busy leaving work all over town. Wasn't easy trying to leave things discreetly as the town was packed for the grand finale of summer in the springs. As well as FAF Nancy and I were helping host a teen art show at the YS Arts Council Gallery. We did a workshop with the kids earlier in the week and then we helped hang the show this morning (took us flipping 4 hours arg! but it looked fab).

vinyl record painting

"night demons"
by c.bayrak

I have heard it said that when an artist reuses an image it's because they've run out of ideas.
Maybe sometimes that is true, I don't know, but there is comfort in revisiting an old image. Sometimes it is because one loves an image and wants to explore how many ways it can be represented or reinterpreted.

Found this snippet about "The Repeating Image" in art from a historical persepctive, with a nice synopsis on amazon uk.

Sketchbook: Face of Abuse

face of abuse sketchbook
I made the decision to not do any solo shows for a few years so that I can concentrate on exploring various themes and ideas. This is one of those explorations that doesn't really have to evolve into anything. That is the beauty of a sketchbook, a place to play, explore, experiment or just practice drawing or painting.

Office for Victims of Crime
Adult Survivors of Child Abuse

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking or assume that because an artist does a piece of art that relates to abuse that somehow it is as a form of art therapy or to help resolve an issue. No! No! and No! The truth is, for me at least, is that because it is resolved I can be objective and approach how I want to state something about an issue I happen to know about.
So the drawing is of a child (me) who isn't aware of what is to come, full of innocence and about to go to a party.

I talked of yin and yang in my last post.
When I am happy I do art that is dark, when I am down in the dumps I do art that is happy.
Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference, lol!
But then life is like that isn't it?
Full of grey areas.

DAYS
Some days my thoughts are just cocoons-
all cold, and dull, and blind,
They hang from dripping branches in the grey
woods of my mind;

And other days they drift and shine -such free
and flying things!
I find the gold-dust in my hair, left by their
brushed wings.

vinyl record painting

I can't remember if I've posted this before, but this one and the one on my jafabrit flickr page are going to be included in a vinyl record exhibit in New York at the APW Gallery in October. YEA!!!!!!!
It was by invitation with the first 50 submissions to be accepted.

One of my favourite blogs is skulladay as it is always fascinating to see how someone can make a skull out of almost anything or see a skull image in a building, a cloud, a leaf etc.

Someone asked me what I was up to lately and I said skulls. I was informed that "EVERYBODY" is doing skulls. I said "sure they are, but I'm not everybody". I'm always intrigued when I hear that because well if we didn't do something because everybody else is doing it we wouldn't get any paintings done. I knew where this person was coming from really in that it is seems to be popular right now, but painting skulls has always been popular.
