Craftivism: Textile Graffiti

In between working on embroidery, life drawing, and a few other things I'm starting to work with the other jafagirls (Nancy and Karen aka jafalass) on making felt flowers for a textile graffiti project. We are trying to make them simple, which is NOT working because our urge to prettyfy is too strong, LOL!

In looking at the definition it doesn't seem what we are doing fits exactly. Having said that I do I feel we are using crafts in a social setting that puts them into a different context. It may not be shocking to the senses or didactic in nature, nor the work itself exceptionally original, BUT there is something to be said about work that provokes a different viewpoint.

Painted Stones in ColourCraft 1976
I love the colours and patterns on these stones.
I guess you can tell I am INTO colour today.

I love the surprises I get when I read your blog. Textile graffiti is a fantastic idea!

When I was a kid, I had a cigar box full of broken crayons. In mid summer one year my cousin and I took the crayons outside and melted them on rocks. The painted rocks remind me of the assembly line of color melting we had on the swing set. It was our get rich quick plan, but it didn't work out nearly as well as we hoped.

I used to paint stones in 1978, sold some to shops and then my mum unearthed one recently, so it's back with me.

Thanks for the blast from the past

farhan, I didn't paint the stones, but I remember the craft mag/book saying they used acrylic paint and then maybe a clear varnish coat.
