Book Front in Stitch

Oops!
Tea stained linen, iron on transfer, embroidery, seed beads

I decided to start a textile sketchbook titled Oops!, which is something that can be ongoing and filled with experiments, sample stitches, text and images. I also started working on another project and laid the groundwork today. It's a little daunting because it's quite large, but I figure there's no hurry and I can pace myself.

I won't bore you with health issues, but let's just say I feel closer to Frida Kahlo than I want when it comes to back problems and the constant hum of pain.

"The Broken Column"

I feel those tears
the isolation of pain
the constraints
the fragility
yes
There is a kinship of understanding
in this painting

Love that cover; can't wait to see the oops filling. I've always been a fan of Frida so thanks for the clip this a.m.

O Jafa, So sorry that you are having back pain. I will send you good back mojo today and hope that you get a little relief. I adore the book cover and the idea of the book. Fun!

Thanks Leanne, it's a drag but inescapable reality I just have to live with. Doc says I have (on top of other probs) slight scoliosis.

Thanks Bill, glad you liked the clip, such a beautiful, interesting woman. Here paintings have an honesty I admire.
As for opps, the first one involves tea ;)

i love the image. goes so well with the title too.
ah frida, that is one of the best vids of her, imo. hard to find them, too. she is such an inspiration for people in any kind of pain. she was a fighter. i love her.

Three things: 1)I've got a sore back myself right now (lower back is killing me from all the sitting at my studio desk these last few days)- so, commiserations on that score. 2)I love Frida 3)Your Oops book is GORGEOUS.

Thanks for making my day.

Oh the broken column definitely speaks to me, especially in regards to the mumborg.

I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on anyone, so I really hope you are looking after yourself.

I absolutely love this image on fabric thing and would love to know how you do it.

Oh claire your poor mumborg :(

I am doing my exercises, taking pain meds when needed and trying to not do things that aggravate it.

It's easy to get this effect Claire, boil up a few teabags and toss in a bit linen to stain it. Then use an iron on transfer (mine was an ink jet t shirt transfer), then if you don't do embroidery, add lace and beads. I think your doodles would be great on fabric.

thanks Debrina :), sorry you have back probs too. I have to avoid certain positions, and leaning over a studio desk and swinging from chandeliers is OUT for good bwaaaaaaaaaaa!
Hey Jaf, is your sitting ball (I forgot the name now) not ergonomic? Still, when in back-pain, I guess all is useless...You posted one of my favorite Kahlo's :) Love the oops-book, hungry for more! Take care of the back! PS: I hope you don't get this comment twice-blog gave error message-so, I'm doing it again ;)

I would say the ergo stool Ria is helping in maintaining good posture. I have degenerative back disease, slight scoliosis, and hypertrophy of the ligaments. So I can do things not to make it worse, and I can do things to help (such as good posture and back strengthening exercises) but back probs are not going to go away.:(

Hi Jafa, love your blog and your art. Your photo of Frida reminds me of myself. I have severe scoliosis and wore a brace like that from the age of 13-17!
Have since had loads of surgery. I'm sorry to hear you have it too, but if you want to talk about it, I'm the expert now! Hope you feel better soon, take care, Jo

Jo, thanks for dropping by. I am not at a stage where I have to have surgery, but my heart goes out to those who have, and especially at such a young age. It must have been really hard during your teen years Jo.

thanks Art.
