Sketchbook to Embroidery

I wanted to see if I could translate an image from my sketchbook into embroidery and of course bit off more than I could chew. The photograph of my resin painting "dead space" is complex and then add to that all the text above it, yikes! But, I'm enjoying the challenge.

This is a good example of how a sketchbook can be such a wonderful resource for work you never imaged you would be doing. I often don't like my current sketchbooks and then when I look back at them always find something new or realize something wasn't as bad as I thought.

I always find it just as interesting to have a peek at an artists sketchbook as I do of their work, do you? This site I have on my sidebard has a great link list of famous and not so famous sketchbooks. One of my favourite sketchbooks/journal books that I own is called "the journey is the destination" by Dan Eldon, a 22year old artist/photojournalist who was killed by a mob in Somalia.

A great post on so many levels! Once I clicked through the back story I was gratified that there are other artists out there who work and refine imagery over several years. I feel right at home. I am impressed that the transition to embroidery retains the spontaneous rawness of the sketchbook - well done. Finally the links to Kahlo and Eldon make a perfect ending.

Hello, I'm a first-time visitor here and was led to your blog by Bill Evertson who sent me the link to this post. I have taken a peak before at your skeleton embroidery, because skeletons are a theme/image of mine as well. I was impressed by it, loved it, as I do the piece that "heads" your blog! Towards the post-topic, I've been thinking on working with a sketchbook myself, seem to have resistance to it, probably because I'm then "bound" to the book/page/size and texture. Sigh, ridiculous, I guess, cause now my sketches are on loose scraps of papers and totally disorganized...Oh well... Looking forward to see what you'll do with this piece! Glad to have "found" your page!

The embroidery piece is really coming along. I don't know which I love better the painting, the sketch book page or the embroidered piece....I'll just love them all.
Seeing other artists sketchbooks is always super inspiring. Thanks for the links.

The Herman Goering statement at the top is amazing. I think you've done a good job translating the page into fiber, and I think the piece stands on its own. Thanks for the sketchbook links. Almost everything I do now starts in my sketchbook, and I find that I'm able to do so much more and move into new directions when I'm diligent about working (playing) in my sketchbook everyday.

I felt Bill, that even with embroidery I was slipping into a comfortable approach and doing the sketchbook is challenging that.

Ria,thanks for dropping by. I am not consistent with my sketchbook but I do like to use it to play, and like to put photos of work I have done and then play around it. It seems to add a new dimension for me.

Hiay Laughing, so nice to meet you art stroll night :) I seem to work the opposite way with my sketchbook lol! I play in it, doodle around images, but it is only when I go back to old one's I see something that I might use somehow.

Fiona, I really don't know what I was thinking when I started this project lol! but oh well, the challenge feeds my creative soul.
