The Reluctant Vegetarian
Well, not quite, I LOVE meat, but when I read that 27,000 chickens were bred in a unlit room so fast their bones couldn't keep up resulting in them not being able to stand that was it for me. I have always had issues with factory farming methods, and the promotion of mass consumption of meat (which is unhealthy). I am just so grossed out by the thought that animals suffer agony or are in a perpetual state of abuse before they are slaughtered and land on my plate. The decision to never buy store bought chicken again was instant. Bugger it though have you seen how much free range organic chicken costs, YIKES. I don't see me buying a lot of chicken so I am exploring a more vegetarian diet.

Maybe I could send you a farm raised one from here? $2.00 a lb! delicious too I might add.

but what on earth are we doing to ourselves? I think the drive to efficiency is not only making us physically sick but spiritually, and as we now see economically too.

Too weird, check out Noelle's recent chicken post http://www.noellesprettypots.com/archives/297

Similar, but different - also a knitting twist.

I started buying and shopping for organic food at my local natural grocers this year and I feel much better. Yesterday, I picked up some chicken breast and it was $7.99/lb for organic free range. As a bonus, we're eating less since it costs more (the 3 of us share 2 breast halves) which should help me keep the weight off. ;)

Hello Reluctant Vegetarion...I'm getting ready to start a blog of my own and so I'm spending a little time checking artists blogs to see what everyone is writing about. What a pleasure to come upon your thought provoking blog and your wonderful, thought provoking art.
In regards to becoming a vegetarian, good for you!!! It's one of the best things you can do for your health and your soul. I've been a vegan for years and with all the amazing produce available to us in the good old usa it's pretty easy to eat a varied and healthy diet. I would caution you to learn how to "balance" your diet. Do a little research to see what you need to get to replace the protien you get from eating flesh. Things like Bragg Liquid Aminos and suppliments like lysine are good things to add to your diet.

Now I'm off to look at some more of your art...thanks for having such an interesting blog...I've sure come upon many that appear to be as boring to the author as they are to the reader...no joy or passion!

thank you for dropping by Julie, I appreciate your advice. Even though I oversaw my daughters vegetarian diet as she was growing it is required different dietary needs. I am not giving up meat completely, free range, but I will be choosing vegetarian whenever I can. So yes, I need a bit more research on protein sources. I will look up the info about the supplements you mentioned.

Hi there. Thanks for stopping by my blog, and taking the time to comment. I was raised on a farm, we didn't really make a living from farming, but we did have some meat animals.

I once had chickens as a 4-H project. The chickens used for this project had to be picked up from the county extension service...this was so that everyone start out with the same type of chicken, and would all have a fair chance. As these chickens grew, they began to first develop problems with their legs and feet, then they could barley stand at all. The problem was that they had been bred to be so large, and produce so much meat, that their legs were not able to support them. So, even though we let them run around in the barnyard, they really had no chance to be normal chickens.

This is probably a little TMI, but I really feel strongly about the need to make a grassroots effort to change our thinking about food production in our company.

Cheers to you!
