I'm Baaaaaaaaaack

Oh my! Vegas is a strange place. While every hotel/casino has a unique theme, they all have the same beautiful BUT unrelenting vomit inducing carpets (well if you've had a few too many drinks-which is rather popular to do here) in EVERY casino, slot machine, slot machine, slot machine (surprised they didn't have them in the bogs as well), more carpets, smoke, slot machine, SMOKE, and more slot machines, more carpets, slot machines and slot machines, and LOTS of smoke. Did I mention the smoke already.
Not my idea of a holiday destination really (we were here for a conference). Having worked as a croupier in casinos in England I don't see the glam side of gambling nor have any interest in gambling (loved dealing blackjack and roulette though :) Not into shopping either, so that pretty much leaves me out lol! From a cultural standpoint and as an insanely curious person it is Americana at its worst and at its best and quite fascinating. My fave person, and oh I so wanted to get his photo, was the 60'ish barber in our hotel who sported a lemon yellow nylon suit and Elvis hair. He was Mr. Vegas personified. I tried to convince hubby to go in and get his hair cut so I could have an excuse to go in and take a photo but hubby had fears of walking out with an Elvis do LOL!
Just an observation: When I was dealing back in the UK we all wore evening dresses and were in our 20's, so I was mildly surprised to see that most Vegas dealers wore generic uniforms and the age seemed to range between 30 to 60 years old.

We stayed at the Riviera, home of the crazy girls, ahem! Not sure what is so crazy about being topless in a las vegas show, but there ya go! It's Vegas baby!

Glad you're back! I have never been to Vegas, but I have a friend who lives there, so sometime I should go. And, I actually like the carpet on the right in the first photo. I think their designs are so loud in case someone actually DOES vomit on them then it won't be so noticable.. LOL. :D

I think LB has it right!

Funny, we were just talking about Vegas last night. It's my SILs favorite vacation (she loves to gamble). My hubby and I are coming up on our 20th wedding anniversary in the next 1.5 years and had been planning on renewing our vows since we never had a proper wedding in some place like Hawaii. I casually suggested, wouldn't it be fun to go to Vegas and get married by Elvis? Okay, not exactly proper, but more than what we had in '89. It was nixed in a nano-second by hubby who hates gambling.

Welcome back! Sorry that Vegas wasn't your cup of tea. It doesn't sound like mine either. I wanted to go to Vegas to see Celine Dion's show, but it cost a lorra lorra money! I like the carpet on the right too, although probably not as a carpet! I thought you were going to say you painted it! You should have cut out a square when no one was looking to hang on your wall when you got back!

Tis true undaunted, not my cup of tea as a vacation spot, but very interesting to see nevertheless.

Lone Beader, I think the last thing they want punters to notice in vegas is on the floor LOL! But I loved all the patterns each casino had. Hum, that is true, vomit would not be too noticeable LOL!

cynthia it costs $99.99 to redo vows in most chapels, but the real cheesy ones with elvis are in the seediest part of the strip. I tried to talk hubby into it, but he nixed it in a nano second too, :(

ba humbug!

Hi CB-
I've never been to Vegas but I think my reaction would be exactly like yours! I have no interest in the place other than people watching and photographing the cultural phenomenon. Whew! Also wanted to say congratulations on the Tree story going national. I know Jim Hannah (he's based in a tiny office in the Dayton Daily News building). He will always take weird or quirky stories like that one and run 'em into the cosmos - so keep up the good work!
Ciao,
Christine

So glad you're back, I was commenting to my wife that we may need to call missing persons. We stayed in a casino in Reno a few years back with her dad's ski club. We'd come in after skiing and supper, try to find the elevators with all the mirrors and glitz and pass the same people the next morning, glued to the same slots and tables. Give me a good museum or gallery any day.

Have never been to Vegas. But would be interested in going to see the "excesses" in design.

I have only been to the Oneida Casino in Green Bay. I was surprised at how thick the smoke was.

I've never been to vegas, but that's ok with me. I'm glad you are back and had fun. Those carpets would have made me sea sick I think, even without the drinks. :)

Nice patterns. Dreadful carpets! (It's true - they go for patterns that will not easily show the spilled drinks, fag burns and ick!)
"Lemon yellow nylon suit and Elvis hair..." Dear god! That's worse than the carpet!

Oh wow. Vegas baby. My brother loves the place. They go every year and I have never been. Bill has been when he was flying with the Navy...they were near by and went into town.
It is not his cuppa and I know that it would not meet most of my criteria for a nice vacation. BUT, that said, I have an insatiable desire to see it. I look at it as a sociological experiment into human excesses! Not looking down at it, just really interested!
My brother says there are quite a few things I would enjoy, not the least of which is going out to the desert and then to Hoover Dam. There are also some shows I think I would enjoy. I asked Bill if he wouldn't like to go for our 30th anniversary this year...have our vows renewed by someone flamboyant and fun. He looked at me as if I had worms crawling out of my years.
Gee, he is no fun at all. Hmpf.
Now Grace, the resident diva of fashion and color and fun thinks it would be fantastic!
That is not surprising at all!

Glad you are back safe and sound.

Hugs,
Sue

Welcome back. You were missed.

We did a spring break trip to Vegas with the kids when they were younger. My best memory: the lunch buffet at the Bellagio. Next best: seeing the water show outside the Bellagio. No, we didn't stay at the Bellagio. Too rich for our blood.

Welcome back Corinne and woo that is some wild looking carpet! I can see how it could make a person queasy after having too many drinks LOL! I went to Vegas many years ago and I remember what looked like miles and miles of carpet and the fact that there were no clocks anywhere. Did you play on any of the slot machines? Glad you're back!
I hate Vegas. Being Schizo-Affective I am sensitive to lights, sound and crowds--in fact any too much stimuli.

Wish I knew I had this disease before I went there and took Ecstasy (did that too much even before Vegas) which led me to be spaced out the whole three days.

Like REALLY spaced out. I barely talked the whole time, just wandered around as if I had a lobotomy.
