Wooden quilt kimono



It is "almost" finished. I actually was able to get all the hardware done (with help from dh) and get it hung yesterday. Now I can work on the fabric part of it, then glaze it. Then of course I will take a much better photograph.

 If I were to this again I wouldn't LOL! but IF I did I would have drawn the whole thing out on paper first. Working with something lying flat gives you a skewed perspective. I didn't realize the sleeves were different or that the patches didn't flare out as much. Still I love the concept of stitching wood together and I do think I will be playing with that idea in the future (smaller scale).

 Materials: mfd, acrylic, plastic coated wire.

I absolutely love it! You've been very busy. I wish I had a real kimono like that. Are you going to keep it or sell it? If I put that much work into something, I think I'd have to keep it.

It's looking great!

Designing on a horizontal surface is difficult. But I love that the sleeves aren't exactly the same.

coming from you LIsa I am double happy you like it. Sherry, it is slated to go into the october exhibit and I am putting fair price on it (I am thinking at least $2,500). It was a LOT of work and is a signature piece.

I just noted you used mdf. No wonder it is so heavy!

Definitely take good pictures of it and put it up on a site like Imagekind -- where they print and you set the profit.

I think your price is not unreasonable for all the work.

Fanbloodytastic woman. I've made at least a dozen kimonos in all soets of media but not wood! I'm fascinated with how you've done. I guess it's closer to the leather armour the samurai wore than anything. I'd love to see this in the flesh...wood.

So glad you like it noonan. You know maybe I don't need to add more after all. I was thinking it lacked something. I have worked on it so much it is hard to be objective (I am sure many of you know what I mean).
Jan, do you really think a print of it would sell? I will have to think about that.
Meantime my newest headache is making a box to transport it to the gallery in October, arg!!!

Well, you might "hate the bloody kimono" but I think you've done a great job.My knuckles ache at the thought of wiring all that wood.Better I stick to fabric sculpture,eh!

The stitching was a challenge in itself cynthia and hard to describe. I did find myself doing these nice uniformly placed stitches and I decided it looked better to have them slightly wonky and not evenly spaced. I used a hand held dremel to drill my holes as I went along. Couldn't pre drill all the patches. So I would assemble, drill one patch, stitch it to the main section, and repeat.

Oh, Wow Jafa, so glad I didn't miss this absolutely wonderful work of art!!! You finished it!!! I'm so thrilled for you. This is such a wonderful accomplishment. I remember you showing it some months ago in progress, the stitching alone was something. It will be so well received at the showing, one of a kind!!
