Sketchbook: snowy evening

A blog entry about Van Gogh's sketches on The Colorist inspired me to try doing a snowy backgarden scene (view from my family room). I don't often do landscape scenes. It was a messy business as I was using white and black conte crayon on dark grey paper. I was hacky mucky I can tell you. When I sprayed it with workable fixative it darkened the sketch a bit more than I anticipated, but I don't think it has dimished the sense of a snowy eve. However I notice things are leaning to the right, DARN it!!!!

On another note I am feeling really chuffed because Columbus Monthly Magazine decided to include the ChamberPot Gallery in their "Best Driving Vacations" speciality publication. They called the story Potty Art and had a pic of one of the paintings, as well as the photo Lauren Heaton took of Nancy and I for the Yellow Springs News LOL! Believe it or not we have sold a few paintings, the most expensive being a $1000.

Wow, I love this sketch, it's darkness makes it seem colder. It's even a little scary, like there could be something hiding behind the trees on the right, waiting to jump out!

congratulations on the sales!!
I really like the snow scene. Did you ever notice how quiet it is on a winter night. Looking at your sketch, I can imagine just hearing the snow softly hitting the ground. It makes me recall last weekend in Colorado too. It snowed every day but the day we left and there was a little snow left in Tennessee when we got home. Thanks for visiting my blog. I edited that post and added some links and photos of the fam.

It works for me. The trees lean just fine.
Plus, the minimized amount of snow - you did it just right.
Rock on!
That looks cool! =:)

If anyone notices the lean... well, it was VERY windy that night!

I think it's fantastic!

I agree paula, when I put the fixative on it I was disheartened, but now I think it worked to my advantage.

oh Yes, dr. dark it WAS very windy when I was drawing this, almost blew me socks off ;)
Casey I think the lean of the trees is okay :), just the birdhouse, chair and table are off, but like dr. dark said, it was the wind you see, honest. lol!

I guess it is phillip, and I rather like that quality about it. I enjoyed doing it and want to do more.

I love that quietness still waters, susie, it's really quite beautiful.

yes potty art from potty coty (my high school nickname), that fits :)

Thanks for stoppying by everyone and commenting.

The sketch is a bit on the darkside but that isn't bad. I didn't notice the lean. I am glad that you sold some paintings.

Hey, JB! I love this cold, dark piece. It seems more melancholy than scary to me.

You know, in graphology, when things lean to the right it means something specific. If only I could remember what it means . . .

Snowy evening is a very good sketch. You could really consider making it a proper watercolor or oil if you really wanted to... The shades of light and dark have blended in just enough to give the outlines the right 'feel' to give you that cold snowy effect. The trees look forlorn and cold - which is what you must have wanted to convey - nice one.
