Black and White Portrait

black and white photography
Hung out with my pal Nancy the other day and thought I would take a few photos. Here are a  couple of my favourite one's.
Bitty looks so so suspicious.

Art Featured in FAHRENHEIT Magazine

spin art on old vinyl record

woo hoo!
It's marvelous, it's fabulous,  it's on magazines, on record labels, etc
BUT
Oh wait!
BLECH!
They don't know it's mine
because
Damien BLOODY Hirst keeps getting the BLOODY credit.

The English Translation of the magazine article states: Do you know that Hirst is known as the best paid living artist?

Hey Damien, you think you could share a little dosh for all the publicity and attention my wee spin painting has drummed up for ya, huh! huh!

Hand Embroidery 3d Butterfly

graffiti art
"Labyrinth"
hand embroidery on cotton, plastic figure, wire, dmc floss
6½" x 5"

MUCH thanks to my friends sweet boys for donating "THUG" for the centerpiece of my hand embroidery graffiti butterfly.

It's based on a photo I took several years ago of graffiti with tree shadows. I then cropped and altered the image for the embroidery design. I used satin stitch and long and short stitch. I can't really tell you exactly how long it took because I don't think to actually time myself, but I am guessing about 3 months. I spent many hours looking at my photographs, coming up with the design, drawing it out on the fabric, the actual stitching, attaching wire on the edge of the wings, adding felt backing, and then hunting for a center. More hours will be involved with framing it, ugh! the WORST part (and much sputtering and curses).

My butterfly series will be exhibited in October this year at IN A FRAME.

Time to hop off

Visiting Artists Studios

One of the fun things of doing the POWA! project is visiting artists studios. Doing a photo shoot gives me more time to explore and see work that often is not shown or rarely seen. These are amazing women whose work, and energy is truly inspiring.Last month was a visit with my Textile Art Group pal.
POWA!: A visit with Bette Kelley
Yesterday I visited Beth Holyoke's studio

Graffiti Butterflies

back to art threads
and final stretch on my hand embroidery butterflies in preparation for October exhibit in IN A FRAME. Had to finish adding wire and backing to them and now have to find pieces that will work for the centers.
This is going to take as much time as hand stitching them because I really want found objects that mean something to me and works with each piece.
Spin Bird worked out perfectly, thanks to KAOS Queen Karen Russell ♥

Cafe Sparkles in Morristown Tennessee

One of the things I like to do is sit somewhere in a town on our road trips and just soak in the atmosphere, people watch and get a sense of a place. We found the perfect spot in the historic district, Java Garden Cafe, with a shaded area that kept us cool.
I thought the "skymart" a wonderful idea, although sad to say there were a lot of empty storefronts on the top level. It was a hot day so walking under the skymart was nice and cool. It's a shame they don't decorate the concrete though, with murals or with colours that integrate it with the surroundings. err, says I posting black and white photographs ;)
That's just the artist in me though.
I nice place to visit, with a couple of large antique shops which required my immediate attention. ahem! I'm glad we stopped there for lunch. People were very friendly and generally a nice atmosphere.

Opera and Photography

Opera singer Monica Reinagel contacted me about the use of my photograph, Cemeterio Maria Magadelena De Pazzis, for  a performance slide show in Baltimore over July 4th weekend. It was great to see how my photograph worked so beautifully for the performance :) Just wish I could have been there to enjoy the actual performance.
thanks for sharing the video

Cheers

Chair Shadows in New Albany

Black and White Photograph chair shadows
New Albany Indiana Cafe

New Albany is not somewhere we planned on going to, but rather somewhere we found in our search for a hotel near Louisville Kentucky. Well we found a hotel and never did get into Louisville. We were too busy enjoying New Albany which has a great farmers market, lots of art shops, art museum, and sidewalk cafes.

Abstract Photography

Looks like an abstract painting, but it's actually my bedroom ceiling at an angle with the doorway to the right.  I have fun exploring textures, shapes and angles and seeing abstract shapes. In the link below they say "abstract photography is not about abiding by the rules". I love not abiding by the rules when it comes to art ;)
Maybe not stunning as some on the link but somehow I really like this one.
Something about the angles, values, and the flower shadow  appealed to me and my finger went click. Anyhoo, thanks for stopping by.
