Gunshots Throughout the Night

I was going to bed and I thought I was hearing firecrackers at first, but then I realized it was gunfire and then a night of horror for our community ensued.
The gunfire lasts off and on for several hours, sirens, manhunt, dogs, loose gunman and we are terrorized. We listen to the police scanner, have to lock doors, windows.
Listening to the police scanner.
Then he is trapped and we find out who it is and we fear this will end badly. Hours of gunfire on the street behind our house and loudspeakers crackling with pleas by negotiators.
THEN
Silence

What Goes around Comes Around

You're readinart by corrine bayraktaroglu originally posted on Jafabrit's Art.
Thank you for dropping by.

I am working on a 20" x 20" oil painted version on canvas of "Dotty" for the Bound 2B Round Exhibit coming up at Village Artisans in Town. Plenty of time left if anyone wants to submit work.
I now have a new custom spin art machine thanks to Mr. Husband ♥ So back into the workshop to play and spin away.

Talking about Round and going Around
The weather has been gorgeous for biking and going around town I couldn't resist leaving a few stencil birdies.

The Crow Tweet'eth

I didn't even realize the Yellow Springs News  had a photo, by Amy Magnus, of my embroidery in the miniature show at In A FRAME, so it was pleasant surprise to come across it.
Amy got a really detailed shot of the stitch work, so if you want to see embroidery stitches UP CLOSE click here.
Here it is before I put it in the show.

Excuses! Excuses!

Seriously I think copyright infringers all must hang out in the same slimy den, they all come up with the same bold face lying excuses. Really you can't tell me major corporations and companies don't know about copyright ;) This blogger, Conor,
has been ripped off by quite a few companies and gets the same sorry excuses.

Like I said each day I find something, and today I found a company called Art Escape using this image from 2010
on their website to promote their spin art party packages

Scanography: Hosta

Due to Copyright Theft/Infringement and attempts to bully me for trying to protect my copyright all my images are removed.
Off to the Studio
thanks for visiting

I just love the look of scanned flowers and have done a few in the past but didn't realize there is a term for it Scanography. I like the simplicity and arrangement of this one but boy check out Roberta Baily's, simply GORGEOUS. Another artist I enjoyed visiting was Yedda Morrison who has added an edge to hers that really appeals to me. If you want to try it yourself, check out this tutorial on photopoly.

And finally from MoMeMaArt

A little Bird told me

that little miss thieving pants blogger has a big sign on her blog that says protected by copyscape DO NOT COPY
so does that mean I can't copy BACK my photograph wink! wink!
Some people are so eager to steal they don't notice the image or the text

like this person on DisneyPinForum who entered it in some competition claiming it is a watercolour of herself.
AND
here they just cropped off my name and used it for their video
and also available on this free online service except HELLO, my embroidery image is NOT free
and
and
on a Family Violence Brochure put out by a women's center, which given my history really hit's a raw nerve. Absolutely NO RESPECT.

Absolutely no respect!

I've been seriously wavering as to whether I should keep blogging or just shut my blog down after 7 years.

Just this morning on bing search I found  many of my spin art paintings indexed with source links to spam sites. When clicking onto the source one or two opened other windows to porn sites.  Each image on bing has a pin button on it, so for those pinners who don't care about the source they may be pinning porn/spam links onto pinterest.

Excellent article by Tara Bradford titled How Image Sharing Sites are Undermining Photography with and extensive list including the many scraper spam sites. And let me add trying to get Bing to remove your hotlinked images to spam sites is hopeless.

A few words from Creators Against Pinterest
and sadly like Tara I had to delete almost 6 years of blog entries until I can republish with small res images.

I have talked about how easy it is for our images to become Orphan Works so the article by film maker/photographer Edmond Terakopian
Orphan Works Act hurts photographers
is especially relevant and emphasizes the importance of watermarking your images

I hear the argument, if you don't want your images stolen then don't post images online.
Artists/photographers, galleries, and Designers need to have online portfolios.
Why not use the argument, "thou shalt not steal" or  "how can we fix this so we don't end up losing creators online and end up with more of this
and more commercial or spam image links.

Stealing images for memes is a major problem for creators but proves to be BIG business for directing traffic to commercial websites.

The Skeleton is OUT of the cupboard

Mr. Husband bought me this cool wooden skeleton quite a few years ago, which I  named Esqaulita. She gets to be photographed in a variety of poses, hanging around town, sitting in my car as a maid, hosting a party for a traveling bra and this one being the most notoriousHow she ended up on this site with  a new file name is a mystery?  How dare she get out of jafabrit's cupboard and roam around the internet.

she ain't yer grandpa
Don't ya know, using her is PROHIBITED
Yes, it's a COPYRIGHT image to me, that means you can't just grab and use it. NOPE!
Oh no you don't try and pull the "fair use" story.
I earn income from my work, so when you take my images you are stealing income opportunities from me.
Very poopy thing to do
and
 earns you a Poo Award.

Just ask if you want to use my work.

The real story behind the photograph which I posted back in 2008.

Stitching along with Paul and Cindy

Naw! Paul H-O doesn't have an eye on my stitches but I have an eye on Paul as I DO my stitches ;) I like to watch movies while I work and this week I got a dvd Guest of Cindy Sherman.  Only watched a wee bit but already I am intrigued.

Contemplatio and Odd Creatures

It is time easily  pushed aside or forgotten as we rush about our lives or get caught in a cycle of petty minutiae.   I know Rodin's context is in terms of fleshing out (excuse the pun) the spirit of nature out of a block of marble, but spending time JUST looking at nature can animate us, feed our souls, ease us, inspire us.

Odd Creatures in the Garden
I was watching butterflies in the garden and decided to take a couple of photographs and saw a strange little creature that I'd never noticed before.
At first I thought it was a hummingbird, or a large strange bee, but after some research discovered it is a Hummingbird Moth.  I have seen them flitting around, but never really LOOKED at them.
According to the link above it takes a "certain amount of luck" to see one.
Here is an amazing photo from Wikipedia

Unexpected Reminders of Loss

more info

I found his stuffed toy tucked in a corner and there staring at me was all the ache of losing my wee four legged friend. There it is, a sudden reminder, and it hits you like a ton of bricks with a spasm of unmitigated loss. I don't want to touch it, or move it, because it will be one more step to removing his existence.

Black Dog Blues

Phineas, my ceramic studio dog, ain't happy. In fact he feels pretty dissed, being taken places without his owners permission
and
subjected to the whims and uses of others.

Yep, he likes to hang out in my studio

So if you want to use images of him for your flyers, music videos or whatever, just ASK.
That is the right thing to do
because if you don't
he might just bite you in your ARSE
and
you really don't want that
do you?

QUOTE PICS: Faces in Things and William Blake

Yellow springs, Ohio
I just love this tree, ride my bike by it often and it makes me smile every time.
It's funny how we can suddenly see faces in things and the steering wheel of my husband car looks like a praying mantis.
Did you know there is a term for Things With Faces?  I found an article about Pareidolia on the website Know Your Meme.

Copyright Infringement: One of my most RIPPED off images

My Dotty Spin Art Painting
A week doesn't go by that I don't find my painting somewhere, either on a blog entry with no link back or credit, a facebook page icon or banner heading, the inescapable spam sites, youtube videos, record labels, professional website/fb pages, or used to promote an event. The irony is that many of the people who have used this image have a copyright notice on their site/s.
Hello, I have a copyright too ;)
I am pretty sure if I used the same excuses for freeloading their work/music etc I would hear quite a few rather nasty expletives and get a notice from their lawyers.

Here are just a "few" examples

Dotty spin art painting by corrine bayraktaroglu

Nobody ever asks, or credits me or offers to pay me a licence fee. Not difficult, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Email me if you want to use it at jafagirlart(at)yahoo(dot)com.
or
leave a message here with a link and I will get back to you.

And if you do an image search, just read the notice "this image may be subject to copyright" and do a reverse image search to find out the source of the image if you need to contact the creator.

History of the painting
It was part of a series of spin art paintings I did on a homemade machine in 2010

and posted on flickr, arts & crafts blog and here in 2010.

What is a JAFA and Fish Feel Pain

"just another f*&%#@ing artist".
A loose collective of friends who get together and have fun with art
We do public art, found art, run a gallery in a local loo, own two galleries, create documentaries, own a art vending machine, sell art, teach art, and have fun with art.

"FISH FEEL PAIN"

Acrylic reverse painting on plastic

He looked like a fisherman and "fish felt pain" popped into my mind, hence the title.

Did You Know
"The first conclusive evidence of pain perception in fish is said to have been found by UK scientists." source bbc

dickie birds & ironing boards

A dickie bird

Lyn asked what a "dickie bird" is and it means a small bird. It is also cockney rhyming slang: I didn't say a dickie bird (word). A spuggy is Geordie (Northern English) for sparrow. I know I have mentioned this before but we have new readers :)

An Ironing Board

I've discovered a new use for my ironing board besides ironing :) says I with a slightly evil grin like a cheshire cat. I have been using it as a work table for my wood quilt project, lower it for drilling holes, heighten it when I need to sew the pieces together. I don't have to keep getting up and down like a yo yo, which was doing a number on my back.

I am painting wood with acrylic and oil, then cutting out the patches on a scroll saw, drilling holes and then stitching together with plastic coated wire (from the electronic store filled with bins of parts and wires-oh it was heaven for an assemblage artist) .

This isn't the first time I have stitched wood together, but not as a quilt.
The first time was when I stitched these panels together for this piece called "sacrificial sundae" and I really liked the effect.

Context of an Image

Found a really great link via Creators Against Pinterest  that went at the Pinterest issue from a different angle,  Thomas Knauer talks about how reducing images to eye candy decontextualizes images and why Pinterest is a pernicious environment.
It's interesting because I was trying to figure a way of displaying my images that includes some context besides my url signature and meta tags (all that can just be ignored or removed). It's easy enough to give context on my blog, but when people grab images from google search none of that context goes with it.
This is an old pic from 2008 that I thought I would experiment with.

I particularly liked Thomas' quote "My concern .... is that this valorization of surface runs essentially counter to the fundamental connectedness of the tradition in which we all are working, the profound value of context".

On the other hand
as a marketing tool

But that marketing only works if pinned images link back to the source and often they don't. Spam sites scrape your images as a means to redirect image search traffic to their sites.
Which is why having your url somewhere on on the image might help, especially if you are trying to sell or licence a particular image.
Anyway just my humble thoughts. Like many I am on a never-ending learning curve.

Dark Shadows

Just loving this old series.

I watch it as I paint, sketch or stitch and go through the process of reclaiming my art life
and explore the shadows of the mind.

Back to ART making

Have had ENOUGH of the distractions of late, although I have to say it has inspired an interesting theme for my exhibit next year.
Anyway
Getting back to some serious art mischief in town and art making in the studio.

There is a parade in town and I am in it with other YS Put a Bird on It birds, so need to get cracking finishing my birds.

In the Studio
