Embroidery and Embossing Foil

Experimenting with embossing foil and embroidery for an idea I want to work on. This will probably end up somewhere for Free Art Friday this week.

I have been busy helping out with the Yellow Springs Arts Council and their new gallery space (tracking down info for picture rails, and buying paint, updating website, etc ). Very excited about their new space and the line up of exhibits that jafapal Nancy has been working so hard on. Considering how small the group is, and mostly a volunteer led council they are doing an amazing job. They have my admiration and continued support.

Scrapbook Snippets 1970: Should Men Wear Makeup and Jacobean Embroidery

It was a big article in one of my FAVE Brit  Teen Mags, JACKIE
Funny that people are still asking that lol! as this article states. I guess it's one of those neverending questions :)
Meanwhile Turner Prize Winner Grayson Perry  just gets on with it.

Interview info at Guardian News
I just LOVE his Textile Work and the story behind this tapestry piece.

Meanwhile back at studio Jafabrit
Doodle Cloth Sampler

I decided to add some french knot's, stem stitch and buttonhole stitch on the flowers based on the jacobean embroidery my mother did around the 1960's.

Yarnbombed Mannequin starts Obscenity Kerfuffle

anybody that knows Yellow Springs, Ohio knows it has a reputation for being alternative, and very liberal.  So who would have guessed that at the 33rd year of Women's Voices Out Loud at the local Village Building this would happen.

Nobody disputes the right for anyone to be offended and saying so :) Sadly there was no attempt at a mediation process that would have allowed a respectful discussion and consideration of ALL views. Nobody contacted the curator of the Permanent Art Collection or Women's Voices out Loud or any of the artists. I would have been more than happy to consider their feelings about our work in the Women's Voices Out Loud exhibit had I been given the courtesy and opportunity.

Studio Shots and Sun Shadows

Always lovely to know what you do inspires others :)
It ended up being used for Free Art Friday in Yellow Springs, Ohio
and what inspires me?
Sun shadows dancing across a room, across a table, across artwork.
 "Feed apace then, greedy eyes,
On the wonder you behold;
Take it sudden as it flies,
Though you take it not to hold.
When your eyes have done their part,
Thought must length it in the heart."

embroidery on metal

I can't remember who was throwing out these metal mesh panels, BUT I rescued them and they've been stuck in the garage for almost a year. Not sure what inspired me to get one out, but I thought it would be fun to try and do a bit stencil embroidery of my old pal George.
This one is destined for Free Art Friday.

Free Art Friday: Girl onThe Wire and all this Graff

Weather is nice today

and someone will be finding a free piece of art in town (Yellow Springs, Ohio). Clue: Look up, look down, who knows where, but she will be posted nearby.
Reminder: Free Art Friday is an art movement where artists leave free art out in public. It  is not an invitation to free use of art images.

WOW, check out some of the GORGEOUS street art in Brazil in Michelle Young's Article. Street artist Smael Vagner said "the tagger wants to put his name on the wall, to be famous, and is a vandalist, but the [street] artist is interested in aesthetics and community."
This has been very much a concern for Nancy and I when doing street art, particularly yarnbombing. While some think yarnbombing is just knitting slapped up willy nilly, many yarnbombers consider the location and
Graffiti as Interior Design
I LOVE the way they did it, and at least one has the soothing respite on the other half of the room from the mayhem of the other ;)

So sad and wanted to gag

I did this painting a LONG time ago and it was based on a news story of a woman pointing to her face and explaining to the reporter that her boyfriend didn't mean it, he really loved her and bought her roses. Guess who was standing by as she said this, yea, the boyfriend. I just wanted to gag.

At the Women in The World Conference one panel discussed how violence against women is sweeping central america.

"FAIR stands for Free, Aware, Inspired, Restored- this is exactly what we hope the girls we work with will become. It is a name that reflects an ongoing commitment to providing girls around the world the chance to live happy, healthy, empowered lives."

Even a Child Could paint that

LOL, but I've never seen a child pick the paints, prepare the canvas and do an abstract painting  based on a specific event. Twombly said,"My line is childlike but not childish. It is very difficult to fake..." When I first saw Twombly's painting I felt like it was just a bunch of wonderful mad splotches of colour. I thought I'd try and give it a go at copying it and maybe in the process learn something. Twombly's painting refers to the naval Battle Of Lepanto. This painting is one of 12 and as one reviewer stated "the luminously intense sequence of panels is meant to be absorbed as a single image, a panoramic portrayal of war on a heroic scale, the view standing in the middle of a battle that ends the destruction of the turkish fleet."  As I worked more on the painting I realized those splotches of colour against the blue sky and water are explosions and destruction. The colours representing the colours of the Ottoman empire, such as royal purple, and red.

Anyway my attempt pales in comparison, but
I did learn or at least achieve a better understanding of the painting technically/conceptually and I learned a little about Cy Twombly and the Battle of Lepanto in the process.  After I finished it I decided to add a few more drips and cover it with epoxy resin and a sprinkling of glitter (my reference to gunpowder and sparkles).
A little bit trivia: legend has it that the croissant was invented in Vienna to "celebrate the defeat of the Ottoman attack on the city, with the shape referring to the crescents on the Ottoman flags." culinary legends

Art Under Attack but taking offence doesn't mean one can

claim special rights, or the right to be rude, to defame, to insult, to censor, or threaten with  charges of sexual harassment.
Some people all too easily feel comfortable claiming sexual harassment because they don't like someone's art( As a REAL victim of abuse I find this to be a travesty but that's another story.

Art on Trial
Here is what happened when one woman found this painting offensive and filed a sexual harassment complaint to the city legal department.

"Restrictions on workplace speech must be narrowly tailored to prevent arbitrary enforcement by government officials according to their own personal tastes (see also Zoning Laws and Artistic Expression)."

Is this obscene? As this site states "the definition is often in the eye of the beholder."  The Supreme Court set guidelines in 1973 and "makes clear that nudity alone does not make an image obscene."

Dave Kopel on Sex Harassment Nonsense
"Through the tool of "sexual harassment" complaint, a single person can impose her narrow tastes on an entire community." Also on the site there is a link to  "UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh website article Freedom of Speech vs. Workplace Harassment Law — A Growing Conflict, explains how workplace harassment laws are being used to stifle not only artistic expression, but religious, political, and other speech at the core of the First Amendment."

Scrapbook Snippets 1971: Fashion, Reggae & Art

Didn't like the dungarees but I liked the models shoes and blouse on the left. You might notice some of the girls in the video  wearing hot pant versions of these dungarees.
Oh yea!  Top of the Pops and  Double Barrel (was #1 on UK singles charts for two weeks in 71) by Dave & Ansil Collins and was my first fave record on the list in 1971.

Crochet : the new, the old, the new

The New
On the domestic front doing a couple of very basic granny square cushion covers. I whipped this out in a couple of hours watching a movie while I waited for the paint to dry on my HUGE scrap piece of wood.

RETRO CORNER

The old is new and the new is old.
What fun, look at these food themed cushion covers from 1980.
If you are into crochet food, well have I got a link for you. Check out Crochet Pattern Central, it's full of FREE crochet food patterns, such as this ice cream cone.

International Women's Day and Protest

Is today, and here is a link about it. The theme this year is Empower Rural Women-End Hunger and Poverty.  Some are choosing to focus on other themes or participate in a protest such as #govtfreevjj-story here.

Scribbles

I'd like to think my abstract scribbles would have pleased  Twombly but alas I think not, they are just scribbles. Looking at the ugly comments  below the youtube video about some of his work, there are many who regard his work as just that. Fortunately he ignored his critics and just got on with it. As this obituary article stated:"he seemed to welcome the privacy that came with unpopularity," and he said, "I had my freedom and that was nice."

I would be fibber if I said I was a HUGE fan, but when confronted with large scale paintings like this in the real (tiny reprints in magazines and books don't do them justice) and understanding the context they go beyond just mere scribbles. My bet is haters wouldn't be able to come up with their OWN abstract painting on that scale and pull it off.

"Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war"

Sketchbook with acrylic and ink

That's a line from Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar  Act 3, Scene 1, line 273. The phrase "dogs of war" is considered cliche or so it states on the wiki entry. Cliche or not it seems appropriate considering how many are beating the Iran war drums and ITCHING to unleash those dogs of war,as if we haven't had enough already. Sigh!

In Military News Retired Generals State in an open letter No War of Choice with Iran

Meanwhile in Studio Jafabrit
I seem to have been taken over with some kind of evil domesticity bug lol! Only one solution, buy fabric and sew till it's out of my system.
First it was new cushion covers.
Then not satisfied and having been smitten with this gorgeous bumi paisley print chiffon that was on sale.
I got the bright idea to make sheer curtains, arg!!!!!!! What was I thinking! Chiffon is horrid evil stuff to work with, especially with little shiny sparkle thingies that stop up the sewing machine needle.
Of course not having PLANNED, I didn't have enough fabric and had to add a brown cotton section to the bottom. As it turns out I really like it that way. Once I paint the wall turquoise, get my patchwork floor pillows (that KAOS queen Karen is making me), the pink lava lamp on,the place will have that slightly bohemian look.

Blimey I am flipping exhausted, but the bug is almost out of my system, YEA! Time for a cuppa I think. Ta Ta for now.
and remember
and if you start one
maybe it's time we did this

craft vs Art: street art stencil in stitch

Betsy Greer has a super blog entry about Grayson Perry Great Art vs Craft Debate .
I was really intrigued with the video where Perry talks about making The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman show at the British Museum.
I liked this comment "My art is what I make, my craft is the skills I have learned in order to make it well" I found  here

Every now and again I will read someone asking if they should sign their embroidery or textile art. I don't see why it is any different than signing a painting if it's your original design :)

Meanwhile here is my mix of art and craft

Hand embroidery on tea stained/spray painted linen
I finally finished this piece based on a stencil art piece I made for Free Art Friday.  It turned out a lot paler than the original and I think I may have to do something about that. I liked the strong bold colours of the original much better.

I have a say too

$2000-all proceeds go to planned parenthood
I am putting two pieces in the women's voices out loud show, a vagina flower called "privatorium mr.sanitorium, and with jafapal nancy's insistence, the embroidery photo "chill daddy'o." Both are a direct response to recent events. I never thought we would have to talk about this, but HERE we are.

THE PILL
It has played three major roles in my life.
1.It was prescribed initially to help control severe menstrual migraine attacks.
It's astonishing that I have to explain a doctors decision but, since over the counter pain medicine didn't work, and prescription meds are addictive with major side effects, the doctor felt balancing my hormones with the pill was the best choice, and it was.
2. Family planning
None of your business
sheesh, do I REALLY have to explain this, DUH!!!!!!!!

I didn't invite the whole neighbourhood into the doctors office (do you?) to decide based on their beliefs or needs. These were decisions that were determined BEST for MY health, and were private decisions.  It's appalling that we even have to defend such private medical decisions, and have others determine what we should or should not do with our bodies.
KEEP OUT OF MY UTERUS

I have a say video list
