Oft Ignored Images from the Bayeux Tapestry

Penny Nickels at Mr.Xstitch did a wonderful blog entry about the history of sexual imagery in textile arts. I have just seen a slide show of the Bayeux Tapestry presented by the Mad River Chapter of the EGA, but I don't remember seeing this. That's because many reproductions/depictions censor or change the image. Unfortuntely it also hides what is obviously an important part of the story (otherwise why put it on there). Close up's can be seen at Mr.XStitch link.

I loved looking at your slide show. Especailly liked the way you changed the color of the leaves on your flower from green to black. I think Miro was in love with the dramatic use of black. Very nice...thanks for bring us these images.
I love the book you mentioned have it in my library. Some really quirky things in there but it is the quilt revolution and it is what we are building on.

Gawd I just love catching up with your blog Jafa! You never cease to amaze me with your findings, your artwork and your quirky sense of the sublime and the ironic. I am totally in love with the little skeleton dude! can't wait to see him all stitched up! I'm off to go and look at the x-rated tapestry now...
