William Morris: Myth, Object and the Animal

It has been a while since I've been to an exhibit that left be gobsmacked.
And this one at the Dayton Art Institute did just that. The quality and craftsmanship was beyond admirable, it was stunning and inspiring.
But it wasn't just that, it was the fact you could hardly believe they were made of glass. I wanted to touch them, photograph them, draw them, drool over them, take one home.
Leanne, you would go bonkers over the
"Crows and Rhyton series"

As for their permanent collection I saw some new pieces and was allowed to photograph them.
I rather liked this Jim Dine Painting, it seems sinister and whimsical at the same time.

It is one of many works exploring the theme of Pinocchio.
After reading about the series I can see why I felt that way.

My morning ritual has changed from shower, walk dog, check news with coffee in hand to throw on some sweats, grab a coffee and check for new Jafa links, dog be damned. Great batch this morning, but the dog is staring with what is either great appreciation for the arts or the two minute warning. Had time at least to find my new favorite Tilleke quote, "You cannot manage a cat, you have to manage your thread box."

I am flattered, but OH DEAR I may have to redo my posting schedule as being a doggie person I wouldn't want your doggie to suffer for art :), not even mine.

I don't even want to tell you what my thread box looks like YIKES!!!!!

She doesn't suffer quietly ;) I think you had a sticker once with that doggie stare that screams OBEY.

ebbandflo, If your 6 year old is looking at my blog I had better put a parental warning on my blog when I post my embroidery then.
I can't express how stunned I was at the william morris exhibit. It was just exquisite quality and beauty and inspired me to think about quality when I am working on my creative endeavors.

Leanne, he had two pieces that I can't find an image anywhere that I think you would have LOVEd. one was a jar with a figure on the top, a black human form with a crows head. It is arms it was gently cradling what looked like a little limp dead finch. Another was a mask of a woman and in one ear dangled a crows foot with a little limp bird ( a finch I think) in its claw. They were astonishing in their detail, and a sense of heartfelt love for these little birds.

Undaunted I have to think they plan it like dancers, a choreography of movements. Each one plays a crucial role and they have to know exactly what they must do within a given moment. It is like watching a dance, yes.
