" ID"Every day men, women and children are murdered, raped, bullied, beaten, and tortured because they are the identified as being the wrong colour, wrong faith, wrong ethnicity, wrong beliefs, wrong politics, wrong this, wrong that, wrong! wrong! wrong! And if they are not wrong in some way, then they are the target of greed and exploitation. Slavery is not in the past, it is here, it is now and it is in YOUR neighbourhood.

I'd add only one form of slavery that was unstressed...economic slavery of the masses. It allows people to turn off and let that tank top on sale made in a sweat shop...makes it OK to not care. It's the dehumanization of the masses that allows us all to turn a blind eye to our own streets towns and people. I did a work about this recently, and it helps to see you my brave friend thinking along these lines too. That's what's needed, action, intelligence in action. Great post.
Excellent post,
My friend and I have a way of looking at the world to improve it. We work within our own circle of influence each day in order to improve what we can do something about. If everyone did that in their own circle of influence, we would begin to change the world.Circles would begin to overlap around the world for real change. I know that by making a blanket to give to someone cold, and making a Kiva loan for a few bucks to a woman in the third World, I am working within my circle of influence one step at a time.
Bless us all in these hard days.
Love,
Linda

I think hmbt says it all - poverty - why are some haves and have nots? Some have opportunity and some have not. The chances for opportunity are diminishing. Linda has great points also. Karen and I have volunteered for the last two years on the Pine Ridge reservation. Frankly, there is no third world like the one in our own back yard. Not to diminish other causes worldwide. With you in this...
Bill I don't think it diminishes other causes to open your eyes and see what is going on in your own backyard. I think it is wonderful what you and Karen are doing!
Hmbt, I have always been very conscious of cheap goods and where they are coming from, but yes, we have turned a blind eye to what price we pay for cheap services and goods. Dehumanization of the masses is such a good point.
I agree Linda, every bit counts, and small or large it adds to the collective.
thanks sunil and all for coming by and giving your support and sharing your thoughts.
I agree, great post. I've avoided commenting though because I tend to get deeply emotionally involved in such issues, and for the sake of my own sanity I've had to stick my head in the sand quite a bit. Not a great solution to global problems, but necessary in the management of my damn depression. It's not because I don't care or don't see it though.
I totally understand undaunted, it can just be too much and not healthy when one takes the worlds problems on their shoulders.
Thanks for an insightful post about an important human rights issue. As "undaunted" said, it makes you want to stick your head in the sand and hope it all just goes away. As you write, however, it's not that easy.
