recycled art

I love the idea of recycling things to create art and so when a neighbour's son gave me about 30 old records he had rescued from the trash I was over the moon.
I have been mulling over the idea of using photographs of dolls and then using adobe to overlay patterns on the dolls, which I then paint on the records. It is in a similar vein as what madsilence was talking about on his blog, The Art of Camouflage" but not quite.

Most people know Abbot Handerson Thayer for his beautiful angel paintings, but as madsilence pointed out he is considered the father of camouflage. I saw a retrospective of his work many years ago and it was fabulous. Despite how they look on the internet/posters his angel paintings are not smoothly rendered but very loose and thick brushwork, and his camouflage paintings were incredible and intriguing.

FOUND ART FRIDAYAgain using recycled materials, this time a lucite shelf I got  for 25 cents at Mendelsons Liquidation Outlet in Dayton.
I used acrylic to do a reverse portrait painting of the actor Benicio Del Toro.

Is that a Bythe doll?

Interesting about the camouflage.

Fantastic - I look forward to seeing what you come up with on vinyl!

I've never seen one of Abbot Handerson Thayer's paintings in person, I would have guessed them to be in soft focus with smooth brush strokes.

Amazing, as always. The doll's face is haunting! In a good way!! : )

We had planned a little trip into YS this weekend but the weather kept is doing inside things. Almost came to see Bonneville at The Little Art but ran short of time and ended up at The Neon to see Miss Pettigrew!

Love,
Sue

That doll is sooo cute!

I think recycling in art is a fantastic idea - in our area not all card boards can be recycled (such as egg boxes) so instead of putting them in the rubbish bin I've decided to keep them and use them for papier mache. What's the point in using news paper when that can be recycled?

We should start a recycled art revolution!

Great stuff. Your derivation from Thayer is very interesting, and yet you've broken from him in a very distinct way.
Coincidentally, I was just thinking about how to use an old record in my art someday! I guess great minds think alike! :D

Lol, you should have seen the look on my husbands face when I told him that you were painting on old vinyls! He collects them! He was absolutely mortified! I had to reassure him that they were probably really old and scratched and only fit for the bin anyway!

Assure your husband undaunted I had to soak them and scrub them to get the muck off them. They were from a flooded basement and tossed outside in bins. I am trying to think more and more in terms of recycling for the found art friday project.

cynthia, I was floored when I saw Thayers work, it was gorgeous big lush thick bold paint strokes. The angel paintings are HUGE, so while they look lovely in a poster, in real life they have a compelling presence. Some of his other work (almost abstract landscapes and rarely seen I think) seemed way ahead of its time.

susie, I am so looking forward to days of sunshine and getting out and walking and doing outdoor artwork. Glad you like the doll.

Lone beader I would be so intrigued to see what you do with an old vinyl :) do it! do it! do it!

Thanks casey, his camouflage paintings amazed me, and he didn't have the help of photoshop either.

I am always amazed at how much work you do Corrine - you seem to be as busy offline as you are online. I see your name all over the blogosphere, and going by your postings you seem to be all over Yellow springs. Does you partner act as a support for you or the other way round - maybe you just support each other - what does he think of your blogging?

Very creative, Jafabrit! I'd like to see what you end up with, from all those records. I've never done "camoflage" art, but I may try it sometime. It's a great way to show things in a new light, and get us to think about the essence of the product AND the original materials!

hiay Sidny,
I am lucky in that my husband supports me working full time on my art. I am also a board member of the Yellow Springs Arts council and run several programs. So basically I am working on art in some capacity every day (sometimes evenings).

As my husband's views of my blogging, it falls in the same category as my art in that it is just another aspect of what I do as an artist.

Your recycled art is fantastic! I have some old vinyl albums in the attic but didn't have the heart to throw them away.

Oh by the way, I just love to come and listen to Vooodo child :) I love Hendrix too
