Got any spare teeth

That's what I asked my dentist last year. He gave me a bag of old porcelain teeth (they can't give you real one's or used ones).
It is called "Hobgoblins" and is made of wood, porcelain teeth, light fixture inside, and ceramic figure huddled on a shelf inside. The figure is sitting above the light to the left slightly so it is half lit and casts shadows in the box.. This adds to the ominous nature of the piece. There is also a statement written above the mouth inside if people take the time to look inside:
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. H. L. Mencken"

I'm so relieved to hear that those are porcelain teeth! When I first saw it, I have to admit that I was a little creeped out...though in a fascinating transfixed sort of way. I do still have my daughter's teeth...but you can't have them! heehee

I wanted to see if I could reduce fear to a simple visual element. I came up with a screaming mouth and then I wanted to show something inside the box. took me a few months to look at the box to see what it was I wanted in the box.
Fear and screaming is primal and a universal theme, perhaps that is why it has a weird fascination.

drat, can't have the teeth huh LOL!

JB, I really like this! Universal, indeed! Those teeth are so realistic, it doesn't even matter that there's no face for this mouth.

Love it!

I think it's important that we all drag as much art as possible from our visits to the dentist!

Hang on, hang on...just what did this dentist say when you asked:

"May I have a bag of teeth, sir?"

Did he say...

"No, that's inci-dental"?

OK, I'll get me coat!
Fantastic, that is one totally cool piece of Art-work, currently we have 5 or 6 cars parked in the river tyne opposite the Baltic Art Centre (a centre for modern art which used to be the flour mills) I haven't quite worked out how I feel about it as to me, it's neither something or nothing, it's just cars parked in the river up to their middles getting wet and rusty. Your art is art with a bold statement and has far more meaning to me!

Just thought you might like to know that, sorry for the inane ramble!

Oh I agree w.j. LOL! Oh tc, that was real good "inci-dental" roflol. mandy, thankyou that means a lot to me. Oh heavens I remember going to the Baltic flour mill when I was in school on the leam (now that is going back a few years). Interesting idea about the cars, will have to think about it or see some pics.

Alfreda, this is so cool!! LOL at first I thought you meant real teeth too. OMG I would like to have seen the look on your dentist's face when you asked him for a bag of teeth! I can just see all those interesting shadows cast from the light in there. I am going to have to get myself to the dentist to see if I can be artistically inspired like you and W.J. hehe!

I love the teeth, that is awesome. My brother had his wisdom teeth taken out a couple years ago and the dentist gave them to him in a bag. I will have to show him your artwork and maybe it will inspire him to make something with his big old teeth!!!

Interesting produce fear with hobgoblins only to be the one to provide protection.

The scream and hobgoblin do produce eerie feeling.
